On March 2 local time, the oil tanker “MKD VYOM,” flying the Marshall Islands flag, was attacked by an unmanned speedboat approximately 52 nautical miles off the coast of Muscat, the capital of Oman. The tanker was carrying about 59,463 tons of cargo. The attack caused a fire and explosion in the engine room, resulting in the death of an Indian crew member. Under the coordination of the Oman Maritime Safety Center, 21 crew members on board, including 16 Indians, 4 Bangladeshis, and 1 Ukrainian, were evacuated by the Panamanian-flagged merchant ship “MV SAND.” Meanwhile, the Royal Navy of Oman is closely monitoring the damaged tanker and issuing necessary warnings to ships passing through the same area.
