What is Google's newly launched UCP? How does it differ from X402? Where are our opportunities?

📃What is UCP?

Yesterday, Google officially announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) at the NRF conference early 2026. They also announced partnerships with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart, aiming to build a universal protocol for direct interaction between AI agents and merchants.

🧐Differences between UCP and X402

It seems quite similar to the X402 led by Coinbase before? But in fact, there are significant differences.

Although both aim to solve the problem of “how AI agents help humans spend money,” they differ fundamentally in technical level, coverage, and core logic.

UCP:

It’s more like a “translator.” Currently, merchants’ product catalogs and shopping cart logic vary, and UCP has established a universal language that allows Gemini or other AI agents to understand merchants’ discount policies, inventory status, and return rules, thereby enabling a complete “agent merchant” experience.

X402:

It’s more like a “wallet interface.” It utilizes the HTTP 402 status code, which was reserved but not activated at the dawn of the internet, specifically to solve small, instant payments machine-to-machine (M2M), without needing to redirect to complex web payment gateways.

Currently, many projects in the crypto space are working on X402, but after reviewing the UCP narrative, it seems only @dupe_solana is relatively strongly related?
