A genuine question I think about more than I should.
Should the United States coordinate with all nuclear powers and detonate an active nuclear weapon on a global television program?
Choose an uninhabited area of the Pacific, for example.
Have all superpowers sign the agreement, have all cameras on the planet point there, and have all nations watch it at the same time.
Today we have entire generations of leaders who have never actually seen what a nuclear weapon does in the physical world.
They read about Hiroshima, they see old photos, and then they go back to their meetings talking about it casually.
A live detonation, unedited, would change that forever, in my opinion.
You couldn't look away.
You couldn't go back to a summit and casually talk about nuclear war after seeing it happen in real time, alongside the other nuclear powers.
The terror these weapons inspire has been diluted into abstraction, and that abstraction is dangerous.
Is it an absurd idea or simply something nobody says because it sounds crazy at first?
