Just realized a lot of folks struggling with their SASSA payments because they haven't updated their details. Been through this myself and it's not as complicated as people make it out to be, though there are definitely some differences depending on what grant you're on.
So if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't just change sassa banking details online like you might think. Gotta go in person to your nearest SASSA office, fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and bring your ID plus proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works). They'll verify everything and send it to the bank, which takes about 3 weeks. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that month's payment.
But here's the thing - if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 relief), it's completely different. You can actually change sassa banking details online through their portal, which is way more convenient. Just go to the official SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, they send you a verification link via SMS, and you update your bank account details from there. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify, but at least you're not waiting in queues.
Phone number updates are similar - permanent grants need you to call 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office, but SRD grant holders can change sassa banking details and contact info through the online portal. Just make sure you use the official SASSA website though, because there are dodgy sites out there claiming to do this. Not worth the risk of identity theft.
Honestly, the whole process is manageable once you know which path applies to you. Just don't miss those deadlines or you'll be waiting another month for your payment to come through.
