James Howells' story is one of those cases that stays in your mind for years. A computer expert from Newport in the United Kingdom threw away a hard drive containing the access key to 8,000 Bitcoin — a move that in 2013 seemed almost insignificant, but today represents an astronomical amount.
A few years ago, the value of those Bitcoin was around 8 million dollars. Today? We're talking about 742 million. It’s the kind of story that gives you chills when you think about it.
For years, James Howells has tried to recover that device from a landfill with increasingly ambitious plans — drones, artificial intelligence, robots. The idea was fascinating, but local authorities put the brakes on: environmental risks, release of toxic gases, soil contamination. Moreover, according to British law, everything that ends up in a landfill becomes property of the site. Courts have closed the door on recovery, considering it practically impossible to find and retrieve a device after so much time, with the equipment probably degraded.
It would seem like the end of the story. But no.
Here’s the plot twist: a Los Angeles-based production company has acquired the rights to turn James Howells' saga into a documentary series, podcast, and video content. The project is called 'The Buried Bitcoin: James Howells' True Treasure Hunt.' James is excited — for him, it’s a way to share his journey with the world, and he reiterated that he has no intention of giving up.
It’s fascinating how a story of loss and frustration turns into an opportunity to tell a lesson about the volatility of cryptocurrencies and luck (or) misfortune in the crypto market. James Howells' saga continues, only on a much broader platform.
Meanwhile, the market keeps moving: Bitcoin around $75,170 with a -0.45% change in the last 24 hours, Ethereum at $2,310 (-0.81%), and BNB at $625.60 (+0.57%).
