William Lovell, Head of Strategy at the Bank of England, highlighted the importance of the Digital Pound and said it presents new opportunities for the UK to provide digital assets. Lovell noted that current payment systems are a cover, and customers move their obligations from one bank to another. However, Lovell also acknowledged that this system works well most of the time. Lovell emphasized that the central bank's mission is monetary stability and financial stability.
Lovell, Head of Strategy at the Bank of England, emphasized the necessity of suppressing the Digital Pound and stated that risk profiles changed as payment habits changed. Lovell noted that the central bank is focused on creating a central bank digital currency (CBDC) designed for individual payments. He said CBDCs are equivalent to banknotes, and it's important to give people that option at a time when cash usage is declining.
In addition, Lovell explained that the Bank of England is working with the Bank of Canada to enable offline payments with the CBDC. Lovell stated that neither the central bank nor the government will have access to personal user data on the CBDC.
