Tencent and NetEase respond to the reduction of the "Apple tax"
Beijing News Shell Finance News (Reporter Wei Yingzi) March 13, according to Xinhua News Agency, starting from March 15, following communication with Chinese regulatory authorities, Apple will lower the commission rate for mobile and tablet operating systems in China’s app store (App Store). In response to this move, Tencent and NetEase both issued statements.
Among them, Tencent stated that, with strong efforts from regulatory authorities, Apple has adjusted its App Store commission policy for China, which has been inspiring for the industry. This change reflects a response to and respect for voices from Chinese users and the broad community of developers, and is a positive signal to help foster the healthy development of the digital ecosystem.
Tencent also said that for Tencent and all developers, a more open, win-win platform environment is on the way, which will help spark innovation and drive the continued prosperity of the technology application ecosystem. “Thanks to this, Tencent will also, as always, work hand in hand with partners to jointly provide users with better products and services.”
In addition, NetEase also said that, with active guidance and promotion from domestic regulatory authorities, Apple announced it will lower the commission rate for the China App Store. This adjustment to commission policies is not only conducive to promoting a virtuous cycle in the industry and achieving win-win outcomes between the platform and developers, but also has long-term constructive significance for the prosperity of the ecosystem of China Mobile’s (600941) internet applications. “NetEase will continue to adhere to a user-first approach, increase investment in original content and technology R&D, and build a thriving original content ecosystem together with all parties.”
According to Xinhua News Agency, Apple’s adjustment to the commission rate will take effect on March 15, 2026, and does not require developers to re-sign the terms.
Among them, the standard commission rate for in-app purchases and paid apps on Apple will be lowered from the current 30% to 25%. Under the Apple Small Business Program and the Mini Apps Partner Program, the commission rate for eligible Apple in-app purchases and the commission rate for auto-renewal subscription after the first year will be lowered from the current 15% to 12%.
