The USA will create an AI officers corps to manage a high-tech army - ForkLog: cryptocurrencies, AI, singularity, future
The United States Army announced the creation of a dedicated specialization for officers in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The new program with code 49B will open in January.
The goal of the initiative is to form a corps of experts who will accelerate the transformation of the armed forces into a data-oriented structure.
Specialists will work on improving operational efficiency in several areas:
All active officers can apply for transfer, but priority will be given to candidates with relevant education or experience.
Selected participants will undergo intensive training (equivalent to a master’s level) and gain practical experience working with existing AI-based systems. Full retraining is planned to be completed by the end of 2026.
The decision followed the Pentagon’s launch of the GenAI.mil AI platform based on Google’s Gemini model in early December. It is designed for legal and safe use of neural networks in defense tasks.
The creation of GenAI.mil is part of the plan presented by the US President’s administration in July. The document instructs federal agencies to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI systems.
Recall that in 2024, 200 employees of Google’s AI division — DeepMind — expressed dissatisfaction with the tech giant’s participation in military initiatives.
