Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum's "rollup-centric" roadmap is no longer suitable

Abstract generation in progress

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently stated that the development roadmap focused on rollups is no longer entirely suitable for Ethereum’s future. According to him, the progress of Layer 2 solutions in reaching the decentralized Stage 2 has been slower than expected, while the scalability of Layer 1 has been developing very rapidly. Buterin emphasized that by 2026, Ethereum’s base layer could achieve significantly lower transaction fees along with much higher gas limits, thereby reducing dependence on rollups as the primary scaling strategy.

He also believes that Layer 2 networks should not be viewed as a homogeneous group but as a “spectrum” of diverse options, allowing users to choose different levels of trust, security, and integration with other Layer 1s, helping Ethereum maintain long-term flexibility and innovation.
