Nasdaq Expands Trading Session Framework: From 16 to 23 Hours Weekly

Nasdaq has announced plans to revolutionize its market structure by submitting a regulatory proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, aiming to extend trading hours significantly. This development would transform the current trading landscape by nearly doubling available market access, moving from 16 hours spread across five trading days to 23 hours of continuous weekly operations.

Current Market Structure and Existing Trading Sessions

Today, Nasdaq operates three distinct trading sessions on business days. The pre-market trading session runs from 4:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time, allowing early birds to position trades before the official opening bell. The regular trading session, which remains the primary market period, operates from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., capturing the bulk of institutional and retail activity. Following regular hours, the after-hours trading session extends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., enabling traders to respond to news and events after the market closes. This three-tier approach currently limits daily activity to 16 hours of actual trading across the standard five-day week.

The New 23-Hour Trading Session Model

The proposed framework introduces a fundamentally different approach to market accessibility. Under the “23/5” system, Nasdaq would compress its daytime operations into a single, extended trading session running from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. This consolidated daytime trading session would maintain the familiar structure investors know, preserving the ceremonial 9:30 a.m. opening bell and 4:00 p.m. closing bell while seamlessly blending pre-market, regular, and after-hours activity into one continuous window.

The most dramatic change comes with the introduction of a nighttime trading session. This new after-hours trading session would commence at 9:00 p.m. and continue through 4:00 a.m. the following day, creating genuine round-the-clock access. Between the day’s close and the night’s commencement, Nasdaq would observe a dedicated one-hour maintenance window from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., allowing systems testing, technical updates, and settlement operations.

Detailed Timeline for Enhanced Trading Sessions

The weekly cycle transforms significantly under this proposal. Each trading session would begin at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday evening, marking the start of the nighttime trading session. Following a full night of trading, markets would transition into the daytime trading session at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning. This rhythm would repeat throughout the week, with the final daytime trading session concluding at 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

One crucial detail involves how trades during the nighttime session are recorded. Any transactions executed between 9:00 p.m. and midnight are counted as trades for the subsequent trading day, ensuring proper settlement and accounting procedures. This mechanism maintains regulatory clarity while extending market access.

What This Means for Market Participants

The expansion from 16 to 23 hours represents a substantial shift in market dynamics. Nasdaq’s initiative reflects growing demand from global investors seeking extended access to American equities and exchange-traded products. The new trading session architecture would accommodate international investors in different time zones, particularly those in Asian and European markets during their business hours. Simultaneously, it provides U.S.-based traders with evening and night sessions to capitalize on global news developments. Nasdaq’s proposal to the SEC marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of market structure, potentially establishing a new standard for continuous market access in the modern trading era.
