U.S. Defense Secretary absent from NATO Defense Ministers' Meeting
NATO Defense Ministers’ Meeting was held in Brussels, Belgium, on the 12th, but U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin did not attend. This follows last December’s cancellation by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken of his attendance at the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The U.S. government’s senior officials have once again missed a NATO ministerial meeting. Some Western media suggest this may be related to the U.S. threatening to gain influence over Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, which has caused tensions within NATO. Former NATO spokesperson Vana Rengesku wrote that in the current extremely tense transatlantic relations, the continuous absence of U.S. senior officials from NATO ministerial meetings sends a bad signal and will only further deepen NATO allies’ concerns about U.S. commitments.
