Dibu kept Aston Villa in victory at Newcastle
Dibu Martínez once again proved why he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world. In the 23rd matchday of the Premier League, the Argentine goalkeeper was decisive in Aston Villa’s 2-0 away victory against Newcastle. With a series of crucial saves at key moments, the world champion thwarted the home team’s efforts and helped his team solidify second place in the standings.
The victory strengthens the Villans’ aspirations, who are now tied with Manchester City on 46 points and behind a streaking Arsenal. But beyond the numbers, it was the goalkeeper’s confidence that made the difference in a match where Newcastle pressed constantly but couldn’t convert their chances.
A goalkeeper at his best
From the first minutes, Dibu had to demonstrate his quality. At the 4th minute, midfielder Sandro Tonali made a solo run from the edge of the penalty area, leaving him one-on-one with the Argentine goalkeeper. Dibu responded with an instinctive reflex, clearing with his left foot when all seemed lost.
Just after the 11th minute, Ollie Watkins had a golden opportunity after a pass from Jadon Sancho, but it was the opposing goalkeeper Nick Pope who prevented the goal with an impeccable reaction. However, Dibu also had his key moment moments later.
The first half was characterized by offensive balance: Newcastle pushed forward in front of their fans, while Aston Villa, the visitor, exploited spaces with sharp counterattacks. Both defenses stayed alert, but it was the presence of the Argentine goalkeeper that contained any imminent danger.
Buendía breaks the balance and Newcastle grows desperate
At 19 minutes into the first half, Emiliano Buendía scored a spectacular goal after a sequence of touches between Belgians Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans. From outside the box, the Mar del Plata midfielder executed a lobbed shot that was unreachable and hit the right post. It was his fifth goal in 21 matches in this Premier League season.
With Aston Villa’s lead, Newcastle no longer found clarity in their attacks. Frustration grew at St. James’ Park, where the fans even directed some insults at the visiting goalkeeper. Yoane Wissa received a yellow card for pushing Dibu when the goalkeeper already had the ball secured.
In the final moments of the first half, it was again Dibu who had to intervene. After a cross from Anthony Gordon, Lewis Miley connected a dangerous header that the Argentine goalkeeper deflected with a saving punch from the corner. Once again, his instinct was the defensive wall Newcastle couldn’t break through.
Dibu as the last resort
The second half maintained the same initial dynamism, though now Newcastle fought to get closer to the score. Aston Villa controlled the pace without finding the precision to once again breach Pope’s goal, but their defense, supported by critical interventions from the Argentine goalkeeper, remained airtight.
It was only at the end of the match when Ollie Watkins sealed the game with a header. The goal came after a series of defensive doubts and a precise cross from Morgan Rogers. With this, Aston Villa secured three vital points and ended a historic drought: 17 matches and 21 years without a win at St. James’ Park.
A performance that projects the future
What stood out most this evening weren’t just Buendía’s and Watkins’s goals, but the defensive solidity Dibu provided. Every intervention was precise, every reaction calculated. The Argentine goalkeeper faces new challenges ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and performances like this reinforce his candidacy as one of the main figures of his national team.
With this victory, Aston Villa continues comfortably in Champions League positions. But without Dibu’s decisive saves, the result could have been very different. It was a demonstration of how a goalkeeper in top form can be the difference between winning and just drawing.
