In the Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps, a tragedy unfolded over the weekend: a massive avalanche swept through several winter sports enthusiasts. Three people lost their lives in the accident, including two men who were already recovered on the day of the avalanche. A 35-year-old Frenchman was discovered later under the snow and could not be rescued. The rescue operations in the popular ski area on the French-Italian border required a massive deployment of rescue forces. The accident in Italy once again brings the dangers in the Alps into focus, where avalanches represent a constant threat, especially during the winter season. The exact circumstances that led to the avalanche are currently still under investigation.
