EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell Calls for US and Israel to End War with Iran, Says EU Is Consulting with Middle Eastern Governments on How to End the Conflict

Borrell told Reuters in Brussels that Europe has not closed the door to participating in efforts to maintain freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, but this is most likely to be part of a diplomatic solution.

He added that Europe does not understand some actions taken by the US under Trump and its intentions toward Iran, but has become accustomed to his unpredictability and is responding more calmly.

When asked whether it is time to end the war, Borrell believes that stopping the war would benefit everyone. The problem with war is that starting it is easier than stopping it, and it always risks spiraling out of control.

He pointed out that the EU is willing to facilitate reconciliation through diplomatic means to truly end the war. The EU has been consulting with Gulf countries, Jordan, Egypt, and other regional nations to explore suggestions on how Iran, Israel, and the US can de-escalate the current situation so that all parties can save face.

Borrell stated that the main concern among European countries is, “Before this war was launched, we were not consulted—actually, quite the opposite. Many Europeans have been trying to persuade the US and Israel not to start this war.”
