U.S. President Trump posted on social media Tuesday that most NATO allies refused his request for assistance in safely escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has blockaded, but Washington doesn’t actually need these NATO allies’ help.

Trump said that he has received notifications from most NATO allies that they are unwilling to get involved in U.S. military actions in the Middle East against Iran, even though nearly all countries strongly support the U.S. actions and believe Iran must not possess nuclear weapons in any way. Trump stated he was not surprised by these NATO allies’ refusal to help, as he has always believed NATO is essentially a “one-way street,” where the U.S. spends hundreds of billions of dollars each year to protect them, but they do nothing for the U.S., especially when the U.S. is in need.

Trump also claimed that the U.S. has completely destroyed Iran’s military capabilities, with almost all levels of Iranian leadership killed, making Iran no longer a threat to the U.S., U.S. allies in the Middle East, or the world. Therefore, the U.S. no longer needs or desires assistance from NATO countries. In fact, the U.S. has never needed it; the same applies to Japan, Australia, or North Korea.

As President of the United States, Trump solemnly declared: “We don’t need anyone’s help at all.”
