Japan's two major airlines will raise international route fuel surcharge fees.

According to reports from Japanese media on the 2nd, affected by the prolonged conflict in the Middle East and rising oil prices, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines will significantly raise their fuel surcharges for international routes starting in June.

Japanese airlines typically adjust their fuel surcharges every two months. Taking one-way flights from Japan to Europe and North America as an example, compared with the prices in April and May, starting in June, All Nippon Airways will increase the fuel surcharge from 23.1k yen (approximately 159 yen per 1 US dollar) to 55k yen, while Japan Airlines will increase the fuel surcharge from 21k yen to 50k yen. In both cases, the increases exceed 70%.

On the 1st, Japan Airlines President Mitsuko Toritake said that due to the tensions in the Middle East, fuel prices have risen to about 2.5 times the level of before. If fuel prices remain at this level for one month, the company’s costs will increase by about 30 billion yen per month.
