Filipino Senator: Disappointed with the International Criminal Court’s ruling on jurisdiction over the Duterte case
According to Philippine media reports, Philippine Senator and current President Ferdinand Marcos’s sister, Imelda Marcos, expressed disappointment on the 22nd over the International Criminal Court’s ruling that the court has jurisdiction over former President Duterte’s case.
Imelda Marcos issued a statement on the same day stating that this ruling disregards the fact that the Philippines has withdrawn from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and violates the fundamental principle that Philippine domestic judicial authorities should have priority jurisdiction.
She also stated that the ICC’s move has raised serious concerns about the inviolability of national sovereignty and the reasonable boundaries of international jurisdiction.
On the 22nd, the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, ruled that it has jurisdiction over Duterte’s case and rejected the defense lawyers’ request for Duterte’s immediate release.
Duterte launched an anti-drug campaign during his tenure as Mayor of Davao City and President of the Philippines.
In February 2018, the ICC notified the Philippine government that it would conduct a “preliminary investigation” into whether Duterte’s anti-drug operations involved human rights violations.
In 2019, the Philippines officially withdrew from the ICC.
On March 11, 2025, after Duterte returned from abroad and arrived at Manila International Airport, he was detained by police, who presented him with an ICC arrest warrant.
The aircraft carrying Duterte arrived in The Hague the following day.
