The founder of Silk Road paid $80,000 for a murder over stolen Bitcoin
In 2013 a Utah man named Curtis Green was a Silk Road admin making $800 a week
DEA agents arrested him and took his admin credentials, then a Secret Service agent used those credentials to secretly steal Bitcoin from Silk Road himself
Ross Ulbricht thought Curtis did it and paid $80,000 to have him killed
The hitman he chose was another federal agent who had been emailing Ross for months pretending to be a drug dealer named Nob
His wife came up with the idea to stage the murder in a bathroom using Campbell's chicken soup on his face for the fake vomit and 10 photos were sent to Ross as proof
Ross wrote back "I'm pissed I had to kill him… but what's done is done" and wired the second $40,000 from his bank
For nearly a year Curtis hid inside his own home, crawling on his knees so the neighbors wouldn't see he was alive
Both federal agents went to prison for stealing Bitcoin from the investigation
Ross got two life sentences plus 40 years partly for ordering murders that never happened
Trump pardoned him in January 2025 but the government kept all 195,000 BTC they seized, worth over $14 billion today
