You probably saw the headlines this week: Magic Eden is shutting down. But wait, it's more complicated than that.
In reality, Magic Eden isn't disappearing completely. They're just doing a massive cleanup of their operations. They've just stopped their Bitcoin marketplaces—yes, the Ordinals and the Runes—as well as all EVM markets (Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche). It's radical, but it makes sense when you look at where their volume is really going. Solana has always been their beating heart, and they're returning to their roots.
What really interests me is that Magic Eden isn't alone in this movement. I counted over 20 major blockchain projects that announced full or partial closures in the first half of 2026. The "growth at all costs" strategy from 2021-2024? That's in the past. Now, everyone is focusing on sustainable revenue and consolidation.
For Magic Eden specifically, managing a multi-chain empire was too costly. By abandoning Bitcoin and EVM chains, they reduce the dispersion of their team. Instead, they're betting big on "crypto entertainment"—a new gaming platform called Dicey. The idea is to integrate their token $ME into a smaller, more profitable ecosystem rather than trying to be a generalist on every blockchain.
But here's the catch: the ME token price has dropped about 87% over the past twelve months. Currently, it's around $0.11. It's hard to sell an optimistic vision when your numbers are heading downward.
If you have assets on Magic Eden, you need to act now. The wallet has been in "export only" mode since April 1st, and it will be completely inaccessible starting May 1st. Before this deadline, export your recovery phrase and transfer your assets to a compatible wallet like MetaMask or Xverse.
The Solana market remains open on Magic Eden, so if your NFTs are there, you're good for now. But for Bitcoin and EVM chains, it's over. Magic Eden used to lose 80% of the Bitcoin market—it's a heavy blow for the Ordinals community.
This is an interesting moment in the crypto cycle. Platforms that tried to do everything are starting to realize they need to focus. Magic Eden bets that the future is Solana plus gaming. We'll see if that pays off.
