Review of Trump's Past Attacks: Four Major Gunfire/Assassination Attempts, Only One Resulted in Minor Injury to Trump Himself
On April 26, following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on April 25 local time, President Trump has publicly experienced at least four gunfire/assassination attempt events against him. The summary is as follows:
The first, on June 18, 2016, in Las Vegas, Nevada. 20-year-old British man Michael Sanford attempted to seize a police officer's gun and shoot at Trump during a campaign rally, but was subdued on the spot without firing a shot. He was later sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in prison and deported.
The second, on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania. 20-year-old man Thomas Matthew Crooks fired 8 rounds from an AR-15 rifle from a rooftop about 130–160 yards outside the rally venue. Trump’s right ear was grazed, one rally attendee was killed, two were seriously injured, and the gunman was shot and killed on the spot by Secret Service snipers. This was the first time since Reagan’s assassination attempt in 1981 that a sitting or former U.S. president was injured in an assassination attempt. After the incident, then-Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in disgrace.
The third, on September 15, 2024, in West Palm Beach, Florida. While playing golf at his own golf club, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Rouse was hiding in bushes about 300–500 yards away with a rifle. Secret Service agents discovered him and fired shots to drive him away. The gunman did not fire and fled the scene, later being arrested. Rouse was convicted by a federal jury in September 2025 on multiple charges including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.
The fourth, on April 25, 2026, at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C. During Trump’s first attendance at the dinner as president, 5–8 gunshots were heard near the main magnetic gate security area outside the banquet hall. Trump, Vice President Pence, First Lady Melania, and cabinet members were evacuated urgently, but none were injured. One Secret Service agent was shot but was unharmed due to wearing a bulletproof vest. The suspect, armed with a shotgun and pistol, was arrested; his identity and motives have not been disclosed. The dinner will be rescheduled within 30 days.
Among these four incidents, Trump was only grazed by shrapnel in the Butler event in 2024; he was not injured in the other three cases. The latter three incidents all occurred within the protection scope of the Secret Service, prompting repeated reviews of U.S. Secret Service security protocols. Media outlets such as BBC have previously described such events as part of the "new normal" of political violence in the United States. #加密市场行情震荡
